Dulles International Airport (IAD),
Runway 1C/9C Reconstruction
Taxiways W and W1 Construction

Dulles International Airport is located approximately 26 miles west of downtown Washington D.C. and serves almost 30 million passengers annually. There are approximately 10 domestic and 21 international airlines serving the airport. There are three runways at Dulles, with a fourth runway currently under construction and scheduled to open in late 2008. At that time, the current Runway 1L/19R will become 1C/19C.

CH2MHill selected Hanson as a consultant for the reconstruction of Runway 1C/19C. Hanson’s responsibilities included:

  • Design of the erosion and sedimentation control for the entire project;
  • Design of the underdrains to serve the pavement subgrade and the light can and conduit system;
  • Implementation of the Wetlands Protection Permit; and
  • General Permitting through Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA).

Tasks included reviewing geotechnical, drainage, utility, wetland delineation and permit information from the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority. Using this information, Hanson finalized the maintenance and operation manual for the underdrain system; finalized the specifications for underdrain, clearing and grubbing; and provided the necessary final design report sections.

The reconstruction of Runway 1C/19C will provide a new Portland Cement Concrete pavement section on the 11,500-feet-long by 150-feet-wide runway. Additionally, the project will provide connecting Taxiways W and W1 between 1C/19C and 1L/19R. Each of these taxiways is 3,400-feet in length, 75-feet-wide with 35-feet-wide shoulders. Taxiway W1 will also be extended to the east of Runway 1C/19C to connect existing Taxiways Y and Z for approximately 700 feet.
