McGhee Tyson Airport (TYS),
West Aviation Area
The Metropolitan Knoxville Airport Authority (MKAA) owns and operates McGhee Tyson Airport, the third largest commercial service airport in Tennessee. Aviation related business activities include scheduled air service, two regional jet maintenance hangars, avionics, flight training, air charter, and support of business flying and personal flying.
By 1998, the area of the airport available for commercial development was completely utilized.
To foster additional growth, the Airport Authority Board retained Hanson personnel to plan and design a new “West Aviation Area” for development. The project was bid in 1999. The major portion of the construction was completed in 2002. The development included an aircraft ramp, access taxiway, property for development with airside access and a commercial office area.
Hanson personnel also designed the public roadway system providing access to this area. The roadways included pavement marking, highway signs and lighting to applicable Tennessee Department of Transportation Highway standards.
Hanson engineers are experienced in pavement design, materials testing and geotechnical analysis. They applied this knowledge and designed the roadways to handle heavy truck traffic.
