Capital Airport
upgrades and expands

Hanson services fuel tanks
at Capital Airport

Capital Airport in Springfield, Ill., provides aviation facilities for government, corporate and private users. The Illinois Department of Transportation, Division of Aeronautics; branches of the Federal Aviation Administration; and private businesses maintain offices at the airport.

Since the 1950s, Capital Airport has installed numerous underground fuel storage tanks. New federal and state laws required that underground tanks meet stricter compliance standards by December 1998, prompting Springfield Airport Authority to close many existing tanks. Capital Airport hired Hanson to help it meet the new compliance standards.

Hanson installed two aboveground storage tanks and removed seven underground tanks at four locations, discovering fuel leakage at three locations.

We prepared 20- and 45-day reports, site classification plans and budgets, and site classifications for the three areas impacted by leaking underground storage tanks (LUSTs). We also prepared remediation objectives reports for the impacted areas.

Hanson continues to provide services to Capital Airport and its government and commercial users and has completed the following projects:

  • foundation and structural engineering for a 5,400-square-foot addition to existing hangar
  • pavement access to aboveground fuel farm, including spill prevention, protection, drainage and electrical services
  • master plan study for airport terminal
  • replacement of taxi access and pavements to the general aviation (GA) T-hangar area
  • electrical design services to upgrade several aircraft maintenance hangars

Garrett Aviation Services

Garrett Aviation Services provides maintenance, modification and refurbishing services for corporate aviation. Hanson provided Garrett Aviation with architectural and engineering design services for a 62,000-square-foot state-of-the-art paint hangar at Capital Airport:

  • We provided civil, structural, mechanical and electrical design services.
  • Three bays for paint stripping, preparation and painting are large enough to accommodate DC9-10 or Gulfstream IV. The preparation bay can be utilized as a secondary cross-flow paint booth when temperature and humidity conditions are correct for coating applications.
  • A downdraft heating and cooling system control temperature and humidity levels in the paint bay.
The design accommodates administrative offices, locker and restroom facilities, paint storage, equipment rooms, raw materials stripping rooms, and waste collection and storage areas.
