Sun
Publications building to house electronic newspaper layout and design
areas
Hanson
provides redesign services at Sun Publications
Hanson
was retained to provide architectural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing
and structural renovations to this 30,000-square-foot facility.
The facility was originally an industrial printing plant containing
presses for newspaper production. It has been renovated into administrative
and production offices for Sun Publications. The building space
now houses electronic newspaper layout and design areas.

The $3.9 million project provides space for 110 employees in a worker-friendly
environment, and is part of an effort to inspire and attract bright,
young talent the growing Sun Newspapers rely on to provide award-winning
content.
Hanson incorporated a number of nontraditional elements including:
- a
7-by-150 foot window panel 10 feet above ground to flood the building
with light while shielding workers from a view of adjacent car
dealerships;
- an
open area that facilitates the work flow moving from advertising
to production, design, copy editing and finally, the newsroom;
- a
loading dock area-turned-lunchroom with a wall of windows replacing
dock doors; and
- geometric
blocks painted the colors of the sky, from sunrise to sunset,
sitting atop the walls that surround the primary work area.
