What
is a
Geographic Information System?
A Geographic
Information System (GIS) combines database software and mapping
tools to help architects, engineers, planning managers and others
integrate information from different sources to better:
-
Assemble
and visualize information;
-
Identify
spatial relationships and patterns; and
-
Display
information through layered maps and data sets.
A GIS
will allow you to click on a location, object or area displayed
on your computer screen and retrieve
information from related databases or other sources. A GIS also
is scalable-a system may start simple and grow to accommodate more
complex needs as resources allow. And a GIS can provide measurable
benefits, including better, more efficient organization; increased
productivity; and improved, informed decision-making.
