Dams
and Levees
Hanson’s
award-winning geotechnical staff has designed, rehabilitated, and
inspected numerous earth, rockfill and concrete dams nationwide
and in several foreign countries.
Hanson is internationally recognized for its dam and levee expertise,
and has been providing dam-related engineering services to the government
and industry for over 50 years. We provide the following types of
engineering services on flood control projects, which include hydroelectric
dams:
• Geotechnical
• Structural
• Hydraulic
Our hydroelectric dam experience includes the following dams for
the National Institute for Hydraulic Research in Santo Domingo,
Dominican Republic:
• Rincon Dam
• Hatillo Dam
• Moncion Dam
• Sabaneta Dam
With many years of experience, Hanson is your choice for dams and
levees. Hanson’s experience with the Illinois Department of
Natural Resources, Office of Water Resources, their processes, procedures
and requirements, involves more than 100 projects over the years.
With a 20 year relationship with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
(COE), Hanson has completed 108 hydraulic/hydrologic studies for
small earth dams in Illinois and Missouri for the Chicago and St.
Louis Districts COE. Hanson has also performed hydraulic engineering,
inspections and evaluations for 46 levees along different major
rivers in Illinois for the COE Rock Island District.
We have provided investigative and design services for existing
dams, levees and impoundment structures throughout Illinois.
For new dams, Hanson has completed area reconnaissance studies
to determine the most favorable location for a proposed dam based
on geologic, subsurface and hydrologic/hydraulic information. After
the most favorable location has been selected, more detailed investigations
are completed to finalize all design features and to prepare plans
and specifications.
For existing dams, Hanson has been retained to investigate and
develop recommendations for the repair of geotechnical, hydraulic
and structural problems. This has varied from seepage, piping and
erosion and stability problems to hydraulic and structural deficiencies.
At a number of projects, we developed plans and specifications for
repair and supervised construction.
